Duration
The duration of the nerve inflammation depends on the cause. In case of Meralgia paraesthetica, an improvement can already be achieved by a mere change of posture and thus the duration can be minutes to hours. In other diseases, short-term relief can be achieved with the help of medication, but especially in spinal diseases, new inflammation of the nerves often occurs. These can be prevented by regular physiotherapeutic exercises. Polyneuropathy or MS, on the other hand, are chronic diseases that require lifelong treatment to prevent the progression of symptoms.
Prognosis
As with the duration of the disease, the prognosis depends on the triggering factor. In the case of Meralgia paraesthetica, which occurs acutely, the prognosis is very good and complete regeneration usually occurs. In chronic diseases, on the other hand, the quality of life is particularly limited by frequent recurrences and pain.
MS requires a lifelong treatment to reduce the relapses and to avoid further nerve deficits. Polyneuropathy should also be treated in the sense of good blood glucose control to prevent further secondary diseases of diabetes that reduce life expectancy.
