Duration

The duration of pudendal neuralgia can vary considerably. While it is not uncommon for the symptoms to subside spontaneously, which is more common in patients with no identifiable cause, the duration of symptoms in other patients can last several years. This is especially the case when the nerve is permanently compressed by surrounding structures. In these cases, a good drug regimen is essential and surgical intervention should be considered. If the nerve is irritated for a short time during surgery or other mechanical stress, the symptoms usually subside within a few months.

Is a cure possible?

In general, the prognosis for pudendal neuralgia is considered good, provided that all available treatment options are included in the treatment regimen. If an entrapment of the nerve can be identified, surgical treatment is useful in many cases and can lead to a complete cure in the long term. Nevertheless, there are patients who do not benefit from surgery and who do not respond well to drug therapy. In this respect, the prognosis of pudendal neuralgia depends largely on the underlying cause and can usually only be assessed in the course of the disease.
