FAQ: What to Do with Sniffling Children During the Corona Times?

Can I send my child to daycare/school with a sniffly nose or a slight cough?

The regulations vary from state to state and may change again on an ongoing basis. In some states, children with mild symptoms are allowed to go to daycare/school if they are otherwise in good health; in others, they are not. You can find a list of all the information available in the various federal states under “Information on the regulations in the federal states”.

When can my child return to care or school after an illness?

This is also handled differently from state to state. In some states, two days without symptoms are sufficient; in others, a negative coronary test is required. You can find out exactly what is currently applicable in your federal state by contacting the respective hotlines. You can find a list under “Information on the regulations of the federal states”.

When should I have my child tested?

When does my child need to be quarantined?

Is the Coronatest uncomfortable for my child?

When must a school/daycare center be closed?

Parents do not have to go into quarantine until their child is actually infected.

How long does it take to get the test results?

The pure PCR test procedure currently takes about four to five hours. In addition, there is the transport to the laboratory, the preparation of the test, and sometimes also waiting times if there are a lot of samples. As a rule, however, the result should be available after 8 to 24 hours.

If your child has to stay home because he or she is ill, you should immediately clarify with your employer how to proceed and solve the problem. If your children’s sick days are already running out, you should have this conversation in advance.

A cold is not a typical Corona symptom – why should my child stay at home because of it?

In some federal states, mild symptoms are no longer a reason to keep the child at home. In other states, the rules are currently being revised. However, a cold is not uncommon with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Dry cough is more common, but according to the Robert Koch Institute, about one in three people with the disease also suffers from rhinitis.
