From Breast to Porridge: the Relaxed Transition

Breast milk – a work of art of nature, which simply gives the baby everything it needs, at least in the first six months. Only from the seventh month, when the iron stores are depleted, it is time to introduce the so-called B(r)eikost. Not all babies go along with this enthusiastically right from the start.

No little master has fallen from the sky yet

So far, your baby only knows the liquid and especially slightly sweet breast milk. It must get used to all other tastes, consistencies and also eating with a spoon only gradually. In addition, it will now replace the sucking reflex with the swallow-chew movement. So, if the baby puckers his mouth at the beginning and squeezes the porridge out again, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he doesn’t like it. At first, it’s all very unfamiliar.

Tips:

  • Feed in peace and without time pressure!
  • Give the first meal when the child has already drunk half his fill of breast milk. Then it is more relaxed and open to new things.
  • Under certain circumstances, however, also works the exact opposite strategy. Some babies are more likely to eat something new when they are particularly hungry.
  • Feed the baby with a soft, narrow and flat plastic spoon. Silver spoons are too cold and hard for him.
  • It is best to start with pure carrot puree or pumpkin. Both are soft and sweet and therefore similar to breast milk. Mix in some breast milk if necessary.
  • The finer the porridge is pureed, the better. Possibly it can still be liquefied with some fruit juice.
