Gastric pacemaker

Synonyms in a broader sense

Gastric reduction, gastroplasty, tubular stomach, Roux En Y bypass, small intestine bypass, biliopancreatic diversion according to SCOPINARO, billiopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, gastric balloon, gastric pacemakerThe gastric pacemaker is another less invasive measure similar to the gastric balloon. With this method, a gastric pacemaker similar to a cardiac pacemaker is inserted into the stomach wall. An operation is then also necessary for this.

The gastric pacemaker regulates the movement rhythm of the stomach. In many overweight people, the stomach is emptied too quickly into the duodenum, so that no feeling of fullness sets in. The electrodes of the pacemaker are placed at the exit of the stomach and regulate the stretch reflex through electrical impulses.

This ensures that a feeling of saturation develops. In this way, patients also eat less food and lose weight. Since obesity often occurs with heartburn, people with heartburn can also benefit from it.

However, the gastric pacemaker does not lead to as much weight loss as the invasive measures (e.g. the gastric band). It is therefore questionable whether the gastric pacemaker is sufficient as the sole therapy for people with a BMI over 45.
