Gastroplasty

Synonyms in a broader sense

Gastric reduction, gastroplasty, tubular stomach, Roux En Y bypass, small intestine bypass, biliopancreatic diversion according to SCOPINARO, billiopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, gastric balloon, gastric pacemakerGastroplasty has the same principle of action as the gastric band. A smaller fore stomach (pouch) is formed, so that a feeling of fullness is reached more quickly during gastroplasty.

Gastroplasty procedure

However, the fore stomach is not formed by a variable band, but by staple sutures in the stomach. The clamps of gastroplasty are made of titanium and are used several times (about four times) to increase safety. The gastroplasty procedure can rarely be reversed. It has also happened that the staple sutures have torn and another operation is necessary to correct this.

Advantages and disadvantages of gastroplasty

The surgical technique of gastroplasty is more difficult than that of gastric banding, but cheaper, because the gastric band itself is quite expensive at around 1600€. The side effects of gastroplasty through a port are also not present. On the other hand, it is not possible to adjust the size of the fore stomach after an operation without another one. Although the gastroplasties are cheaper compared to the gastric band, they have made it almost superfluous because the gastric band for stomach reduction simply offers decisive advantages such as the possibility of fine adjustment.
