Definition

The gastric band is a surgical method of obesity surgery to control extreme, pathological overweight when other measures such as diet and exercise have failed. It is applied laparoscopically, i.e. using a camera and very small abdominal incisions through which the camera and surgical instruments are inserted. By attaching a gastric band, the stomach is narrowed, making it impossible to eat large amounts of food, which helps to reduce weight.
