Gastroenterology

Typical gastroenterology treatment areas include:

  • Reflux disease
  • Gastric ulcer
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • jaundice (e.g. in hepatitis)
  • chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease)
  • functional disorders of the digestive tract (such as irritable stomach, irritable bowel)
  • cancers of the digestive tract (such as stomach cancer, colon cancer)

To diagnose such diseases, the gastroenterologist uses various examination methods. These include, above all, ultrasound examination of the abdominal cavity as well as endoscopic procedures such as gastroscopy (gastroscopy), colonoscopy (colonoscopy) and laparoscopy (laparoscopy). Minor procedures can also be performed during an endoscopy if needed. For example, the gastroenterologist can take tissue samples (biopsy), remove intestinal polyps or dilate narrowed bile ducts.
