How naproxen works Naproxen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Like all NSAIDs, it has analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory (antiphlogistic) effects. These effects come about because naproxen inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX).
