How to suppress the retching sensation
The gag reflex is caused by the impression material being pressed against the palate. Since digital dental impressions are made without impression materials, the gag reflex is usually absent. If an intraoral scan is not possible, there are various possibilities to suppress the retching sensation: taking the impression in an upright position (looking slightly downwards while sitting) conscious breathing through the nose distraction: wiggling the toes, counting down from 1000 in the head, etc. The gagging sensation can be reduced by correct dosage and filling the tray
- Take impressions in an upright position (look slightly down while sitting)
- Conscious breathing through the nose
- Distraction: wiggle your toes, count down from 1000 in your head, etc.
- The correct dosage and filling of the spoon can reduce gagging
