Kolpitis in pregnancy – you must know that!
Colitis in pregnancy can cause serious complications and must be treated in any case. Ascending infections from the vagina can lead to infection of the uterus and the unborn child. Depending on the pathogen, it can lead to malformations or even death of the child.
In addition, premature labor and thus premature birth can be triggered. In patients with existing colitis at the time of birth, a caesarean section is usually performed because the child can become infected with the bacteria on its way through the birth canal and through the vagina. In the womb, the child is partly protected by the mother’s immune system. After birth, however, the child’s immune system is significantly weakened. Bacterial infections can therefore take a serious course.
What is atrophic colitis?
Athrophic colitis is usually a symptom of old age. Due to the declining estrogen level in the menopause, the vaginal mucosa becomes thin, cracked and dry. This favors the penetration of bacteria and the development of an inflammation.
Menopausal women often report itching and burning in the vagina or pain during intercourse. Due to this altered vaginal environment, germs can settle and cause an inflammation. For this reason, therapy should be initiated at the first signs of vaginal dryness in order to prevent infection before it occurs. Here, moisturizing gels with hyaluronic acid, as well as vitamins A and E or, if necessary, oestrogen-containing ointments can be applied.
