Levomenol is found in preparations for external use, such as lip balms, grease pencils, solutions, and creams, as well as in preparations made from chamomile flowers. It is also a typical ingredient in many cosmetics. Levomenol is also known as (-)-α-bisabolol. It should not be confused with levomenthol.
Structure and properties
Levomenol (C15H26O, Mr = 222.4 g/mol) is a naturally unsaturated monocyclic sesquiterpene alcohol found in the essential oil of true chamomile. It exists as a colorless, viscous liquid with a faint, characteristic odor and is practically insoluble in water. In ethanol, however, it is readily soluble. Levomenol can also be produced synthetically.
Effects
Levomenol has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, wound healing, skin care, and antispasmodic properties, among others.

Indications for use include inflammatory, itchy, and allergic skin conditions.
