Lily of the Valley: Dosage

Lily of the valley herb is usually processed in crushed form in finished medicines and combination preparations. The prescription preparations contain precisely adjusted lily of the valley powder, that is, powder containing an exactly determined content of cardiac active glycosides. The preparations are available on prescription in the form of tablets, dragées or drops. The available homeopathic remedies are usually available at pharmacies.

Lily of the Valley: What dose?

The average daily dose, unless otherwise prescribed, is 0.6 grams of powdered, adjusted lily of the valley herb. The single dose is 0.2 grams.

Lily of the Valley: Own preparation not advisable

Since the dose that may be taken daily for therapeutic purposes is precisely defined and should not be exceeded, making your own tea is not advisable. The dose could not be accurately adjusted in a tea prepared in-house.

When should lily of the valley not be taken?

Taking lily of the valley preparations is contraindicated during ongoing therapy with digitalis glycosides (heart-strengthening agents) and known potassium deficiency.

Special Notes

Lily of the valley is considered a very highly toxic plant, and this statement refers to all parts of the plant. Lily of the valley preparations should therefore only be taken under medical supervision.

High-dose use results in nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Especially in one- to three-year-olds, such complaints and dizziness may occur in severe form.

However, because of the difficult absorption of the toxins contained via the gastrointestinal tract, severe poisoning and fatal courses are not usually expected.

First aid for lily of the valley poisoning.

In cases of lily of the valley poisoning, the first aid measure should be to induce vomiting and give charcoal powder and sodium sulfate. In the hospital, gastric lavage is usually given directly.

Lily of the valley herb should be stored in a dry place, away from light and inaccessible to children.
