Marshmallow syrup is available in pharmacies and drugstores. You can make it yourself or purchase it from suppliers. Marshmallow is also a typical ingredient in snail juice and the syrup is also used to make finished medicines.
Ingredients
Various manufacturing regulations exist. For example, the German Drug Codex (DAC) and the Austrian Pharmacopoeia (ÖAB) contain a monograph. Ingredients generally include:
- Marshmallow roots
- Water
- Sucrose (sugar)
- Preservatives: ethanol, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate and propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate.
Sugar-free variants with sorbitol exist. Marshmallow syrup can also be homemade (see under DIY medicines).
Effects
Marshmallow syrup has soothing, antitussive (cough suppressant), immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. The mucilages in the roots are primarily believed to be responsible for the effects.

- Irritative cough
- Inflammation of the mouth and throat
- Mild inflammation of the gastric mucosa, digestive problems.

Contraindications
Marshmallow syrup is contraindicated in hypersensitivity and in children under 3 years of age. For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Interactions
Absorption of concomitantly taken medications may be delayed.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include hypersensitivity reactions.
