Mumps (Parotitis Epidemica): Or something else? Differential Diagnosis

Blood, blood-forming organs – immune system (D50-D90).

Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (E00-E90).

  • Diabetes mellitus

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)

  • Hemangioma (hemangioma)
  • Lymphangioma – benign growths of the lymphatic vessels.
  • Lymphadenitis colli – swelling of the lateral neck due to lymphatic congestion; e.g. due toinfections in the tooth and mouth area.

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

Mouth, esophagus (food pipe), stomach and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).

  • Cherubism – autosomal-dominant hereditary bone disease resulting in facial deformity due to cystic bone distortion of the mandible and maxilla (symmetrical swelling); usually begins in infancy.
  • Chronic recurrent juvenile parotitis (CRJP; unilateral or bilateral); cause unknown to date.
  • Dental infections – infection in the tooth and mouth area.
  • Parotid stones – stones in the ducts of the parotid gland.
  • Parotitis, bilateral; e.g., consequence of permanent damaging alcohol consumption; often shows a spreading of the earlobes.
  • Parotid cyst – fluid accumulation in the parotid gland.
  • Sialolithiasis (salivary stones)

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Sjögren’s syndrome (group of sicca syndromes) – autoimmune disease from the group of collagenoses, resulting in a chronic inflammatory disease of the exocrine glands, most commonly the salivary and lacrimal glands; typical sequelae or complications of sicca syndrome are:
    • Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye syndrome) due to lack of wetting of the cornea and conjunctiva with tear fluid.
    • Increased susceptibility to caries due to xerostomia (dry mouth) due to reduced salivary secretion.
    • Rhinitis sicca (dry nasal mucous membranes), hoarseness and chronic cough irritation and impaired sexual function due to disruption of mucous gland production of the respiratory tract and genital organs.

Neoplasms – tumor diseases (C00-D48).

  • Heerfordt syndrome (febris uveo-parotidea subchronica) – extrapulmonary (“outside the lungs”) manifestation (“becoming visible”) of sarcoidosis (Boeck’s disease) in the parotid gland, which has a medium-dense, constant swelling on one rather than both sides. Smaller salivary glands may also be affected.
  • Parotid tumor – swelling of the parotid gland.
  • Rhabdomyosarcoma of the masseter (unilateral).

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

  • Uremia (occurrence of urinary substances in the blood above normal levels).

Genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract – reproductive organs) (N00-N99).

Medication

  • Drug side effects such as phenylbutazone, this is an anti-inflammatory, ie.
