Products
Metergoline is commercially available in the form of tablets for animals. It has been approved in many countries since 1990.
Structure and properties
Metergoline (C25H29N3O2, Mr = 403.5 g/mol) is a synthetic ergoline derivative.
Effects
Metergoline (ATCvet QG02CB05) has antiserotoninergic properties and inhibits prolactin secretion. The effects are due to antagonism at serotonin 5HT receptors. Unlike other prolactin inhibitors, metergoline is not a dopamine agonist and is not directly dopaminergic, only indirectly.
