Methenamine is commercially available as an ointment (Antihydral). It has been approved in many countries since 1968.
Structure and properties
Methenamine or hexamine (C6H12N4, Mr = 140.2 g/mol) exists as a white crystalline powder or as colorless crystals and is readily soluble in water.
Effects
Methenamine (ATC D11AA03) has antiperspirant and antimicrobial properties. The effects are due to the release of formaldehyde in acidic environments.
Indications
For the treatment of heavy sweating, especially in the armpits, on the hands and feet.
Dosage
According to the package leaflet. The drug is applied thinly once or twice a day. When sweating subsides, the preparation can be applied at longer intervals.
Abuse
Methenamine is one of the precursors for explosives.

- Weeping or blistered changed skin
- Facial area

Interactions
Interactions with other drugs are not known to date.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include hypersensitivity, dry and chapped skin. If this occurs, a greasy ointment may be applied.
