Products
Methoprene is available in many countries exclusively in combination with the insecticide fipronil as a spot-on solution (Frontline Combo).
Structure and properties
Methoprene (C19H34O3, Mr = 310.5 g/mol) is present in drugs in the form of the active -enantiomer S-methoprene.
Effects
Methoprene (ATCvet QP53AX65) is ovicidal and larvicidal. It inhibits the development of immature stages of insects. Methoprene is an analog of juvenile hormone and, like fipronil, distributes well in the coat and is detectable for several weeks.
Indications
Methoprene is used in combination with fipronil in cats and dogs to prevent and treat infestations of fleas, ticks, lice, and hair lice.
