Milrinone is commercially available as a solution for injection (Corotrope, generic). It was approved in many countries in 1992.
Structure and properties
Milrinone (C12H9N3O, Mr = 211.22 g/mol) is a bipyridine derivative and a carbonitrile derivative of amrinone.
Effects
Milrinone (ATC C01CE02) has positive inotropic and vasodilatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of phosphodiesterase III.
Indications
For short-term intravenous treatment of heart failure.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. Milrinone is injected intravenously and administered as an infusion.

Interactions
There are no known drug-drug interactions to date.
Adverse effects
The most commonly observed adverse effects include headache and cardiovascular disturbances such as arrhythmias, low blood pressure, and angina. Occasional occurrences include: Thrombocytopenia, hypokalemia, tremor, altered liver enzymes. Very rarely, torsades de pointe, bronchospasm, skin reactions including local reactions at the injection site, anaphylactic shock.
