The following symptoms and complaints may indicate kinetosis (motion sickness):
- Yawning
- Tiredness/fatigue/sleepiness
- Light shivering
- Cold sweatiness
- Paleness
- Nausea (nausea)/vomiting
- Vertigo (dizziness)
- Forced swallowing
- Heartburn
- Diarrhea (diarrhea) or constipation (constipation).
- Hypotension (low blood pressure)
- Cephalgia (headache)
- Nervousness
- Depression (feeling like you want to die)
- Apathy
Symptoms subside when movement ceases, but may persist for hours to a few days.
Mal de débarquement syndrome
Land sickness versus Mal de Débarquement syndrome (French Mal = sickness and French.Debarquement = to leave a ship): compared to simple land sickness, Mal de Débarquement syndrome lasts longer than 48 hours.
Mal de débarquement syndrome is present when the following 4 criteria are met:
- Persistent vertigo (swaying, rocking, up-and-down dizziness, or staggering).
- Occurrence within 48 hours of leaving a vehicle (ship, aircraft, automobile)
- Temporary abatement of symptoms with renewed movement, such as driving a car.
- No unusual features such as hearing loss, unilateral weakness, numbness, or incoordination
Differential diagnosis: vestibular migraine.
