Parotitis epidemica is usually diagnosed on the basis of the clinical picture.
Optional medical device diagnosis-depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnosis, and obligatory medical device diagnosis-for differential diagnosis.
- Abdominal ultrasonography (ultrasound examination of abdominal organs) – for suspected pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) as the method of choice (in mild cases).
- Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen (abdominal CT) – in suspected pancreatitis (moderate / severe course) as the method of choice.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (abdominal MRI) – when pancreatitis is suspected.
- Computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging of the skull (cranial CT or.cCT/cranial MRI or cMRI) – if meningitis (meningitis) is suspected.
- Thyroid sonography (ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland) – if thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid gland) is suspected.
- Echocardiography (echo; heart ultrasound) – if myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) is suspected.
- X-rays of the affected joints – if arthritis (joint inflammation) is suspected.
