Nail Bed Inflammation (Paronychia): Causes

Pathogenesis (development of disease)

The development of acute paronychia is favored by trauma (injury) or ingrown nails, as these provide ideal entry sites for fungi and bacteria. The bacteria are mostly staphylococci and streptococci.

Patients with diabetes mellitus are often affected by chronic paronychia due to their generally weakened immune system. Similarly, people whose hands are frequently exposed to a moist environment suffer from chronic nail bed inflammation because the moisture attacks the skin, cracking it and thus promoting the penetration of germs.
