Nettle: Medicinal Uses

Products

The medicinal drug and teas are available in pharmacies and drugstores. In addition, capsules, drops, juices and topical medicines such as gels are available, among others.

Stem plant

The parent plants are (greater nettle) and (lesser nettle) from the nettle family (Urticaceae).

Medicinal drug

Nettle leaves (Urticae folium) are the dried, whole or cut leaves of , or a mixture of the two species. The pharmacopoeia requires a minimum content of caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid. In addition to the leaves, the stinging nettle roots and rhizomes (Urticae radix), the stinging nettle herb (Urticae herba), and the stinging nettle fruits (Urticae fructus) are also used. Extracts and powders, among other things, are made from the medicinal drugs.

Effects

Preparations from the nettle leaves have mild diuretic properties.

Indications for use

Nettle leaves and herb are used primarily for urinary tract infections and female cystitis. Preparations from the roots are used for the treatment of benign prostate enlargement in men. In addition, there are numerous other applications, but they are insufficiently documented.

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Edema due to cardiac or renal insufficiency.
