Pharyngitis: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of pharyngitis (pharyngitis).

Family history

  • What is the current health status of your family members? Are there currently streptococcal infections in the family environment or contact with patients with Pfeiffer’s glandular fever?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Do you have symptoms such as cough, difficulty swallowing, or a scratchy throat?
  • Do you have a fever?
  • How long have these symptoms been present?
  • Do you have any pain? If so, where?
  • Do you notice a foreign body sensation in your throat?
  • Do you have chronic cough irritation?
  • Do you have a constant compulsion to clear your throat?
  • Do you have difficulty swallowing?
  • Do you wash your hands regularly?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis

  • Do you smoke? If yes, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol more often? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses of it per day?

Self anamnesis incl. medication anamnesis

  • Pre-existing conditions (diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism (hypothyroidism), immunodeficiencies, allergies).
  • Operations
  • Radiotherapy
  • Allergies
  • Environmental history (air conditioning, dust exposure).
  • Medication history
