Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

- Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?
Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).
- Do you tend to experience water retention in the tissues, breast tenderness/pain in the breasts, or back/abdominal pain in the days leading up to menstruation?
- Do you suffer from general symptoms such as headaches, hot flashes, or constipation on the days leading up to menstruation?
- Have you noticed mood swings, irritability or difficulty concentrating before your period?
- Have you noticed any other complaints? When do these occur? Before and with the period?
- Are there any complaints that persist after the period?
Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.
- Do you eat a balanced diet?
- Do you like to drink coffee, black and green tea? If so, how many cups per day?
Self history including medication history.
