Premenstrual Syndrome: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Family history

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Do you tend to experience water retention in the tissues, breast tenderness/pain in the breasts, or back/abdominal pain in the days leading up to menstruation?
  • Do you suffer from general symptoms such as headaches, hot flashes, or constipation on the days leading up to menstruation?
  • Have you noticed mood swings, irritability or difficulty concentrating before your period?
  • Have you noticed any other complaints? When do these occur? Before and with the period?
  • Are there any complaints that persist after the period?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
  • Do you like to drink coffee, black and green tea? If so, how many cups per day?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (hormonal imbalances)

  • Allergies
  • Medication history
