Everyone gets wrinkles in the course of their life, because the skin becomes thinner and loses elasticity. However, you can prevent wrinkles with a healthy lifestyle – among other things, a balanced diet and careful UV protection are crucial. If wrinkles have formed, there are many ways to treat them today. Among other things, a therapy with Botox or hyaluronic acid is possible. Certain wrinkles can also be removed by laser. Learn more about the various treatment methods and their risks here.
Why do wrinkles develop?
Wrinkles are caused by the natural aging process of the skin. As we age, the skin loses elasticity and contains less collagen and hyaluronic acid than it did when we were younger. As a result, wrinkles appear over time. How much the skin ages depends on internal and external factors.
Our genes play a decisive role in the internal factors – and unfortunately we cannot influence them. The situation is different with the external factors: Here, in addition to the right diet, healthy lifestyle habits (for example, abstaining from alcohol and nicotine) and regular skin care, protection against UV light plays a decisive role.
Different types of wrinkles
Depending on the cause and place of origin, different types of wrinkles are distinguished. Below is a list of the most common types of wrinkles:
- Gravity wrinkles are caused by a decrease in the firmness of the skin. They are particularly common in the area of the chin and neck.
- Mimic wrinkles – such as the so-called frown line between the eyebrows – are formed by the activity of the facial muscles.
- Perioral wrinkles are wrinkles that appear around the mouth. In contrast, wrinkles between the corner of the nose and mouth are called nasolabial folds.
- Wrinkles at the corners of the mouth extend the mouth downward and often give the affected person a sad, bitter appearance.
- Actinic wrinkles are caused by solarium visits and years of sun exposure.
- Crow’s feet are small wrinkles that are caused, for example, by squinting the eyes when laughing at the corner of the eye.
Prevent wrinkles
In a natural way, the development of wrinkles can not be completely prevented – but it can be delayed and mitigated. First and foremost, a healthy lifestyle is important for this, because factors such as an unhealthy diet, stress, too little sleep, as well as alcohol and nicotine consumption can negatively influence skin aging.
In addition, UV light is a central factor in the development of wrinkles. Therefore, always make sure you use adequate sun protection and avoid excessive sunbathing. It is also better to avoid visits to the solarium.
Anti-aging and wrinkle creams are often used to prevent wrinkles. Whether these creams are actually effective, however, has not yet been scientifically proven.
The right diet makes all the difference
Instead of expensive creams, you should therefore prefer fruits and vegetables, because the following foods are – used in the long term – real anti-aging miracles:
- Tomatoes
- Carrots
- Berries (for example, elderberries, blueberries)
- Spinach
- Broccoli
