Prognosis of a neck fistula
Fistulas on the neck get bigger and bigger over time and can become inflamed again and again. Very rarely, neck fistulas can also degenerate, i.e. malignant tumors develop from the fistulas. Neck fistulas do not usually heal spontaneously by themselves, but in most cases must be surgically removed.
Surgery to remove a neck fistula usually goes very well and the fistula can be completely removed, including its ducts and branches. Sometimes there are recurrences (relapses) and an operated fistula forms again. This happens if the fistula was not completely removed during surgery.
