Prophylaxis
For older patients, fall prophylaxis is recommended. The aim is to eliminate possible causes for a fall.Such causes of falls can be internal (e.g. heart attack or loss of consciousness) but also neurological (cerebral infarction, excessive medication with sleeping pills). Unfortunately, the sources of a fall with subsequent fracture are manifold.
You also have to think of natural tripping hazards such as carpets, cables lying around, wet floors, or unsuitable footwear. For sportsmen in the snowboard or skateboard area there are special wrist protectors which protect the wrist with a plastic splint. Such protectors do not cost more than 20 Euro and are available in every sports store.
Since the wrist fracture is the most common bony injury when snowboarding, most snowboarding gloves have this plastic splint integrated at wrist height as standard to prevent a fracture of the wrist. In addition, beginners’ courses are the first to learn the “right way to fall” on the forearms. So there are definitely possibilities to prevent a protracted wrist fracture.
