Skin Abscess, Boil and Carbuncle: Surgical Therapy

1. Order

Skin abscess

  • Surgical opening of the abscess by stab incision (making an incision with a scalpel), drainage and irrigation of the abscess cavity, placement of a drain (drainage) to prevent premature closure and to allow further outflow of secretions.Concomitant antibiotic treatment for small skin abscesses increased the chance of initial healing by 12-13 percentage points. The benefit was limited to patients with Staphylococcus aureus infections alone.

Boils

  • Primarily, local therapy is performed by means of a traction ointment (e.g., ichthyol); later, a surgical incision and insertion of a drain is performed to ensure drainage of secretions.

Carbuncle
