Skin rash on the upper eyelid

Skin rashes can basically affect both the upper and lower eyelid. However, there are some changes that are more common on the upper eyelid. These include inflammation of the eyelid margin (blepharitis).

This inflammation of the eyelid margin, which is accompanied by swelling and redness, as well as crusty and scaly coatings, itches very badly and sometimes hurts. Wrong make-up can also lead to skin changes and rashes on the upper eyelid. Another common reason for a rash on the upper eyelid is neurodermatitis.

Skin rash on the lower eyelid

The lower eyelid may suffer from a rash due to various causes. One possible cause is an intolerance of care products or make-up. Especially kajal pencils, which are often applied to the inner lower lid margin, can cause irritation here.

Another possible cause of a rash on the lower eyelid is inflammation of the eyelid margin (blepharitis). Also hailstones or barley grains can cause skin changes here, in the sense of redness and swelling of the eyelid. However, this would not be called a skin rash.

Baby and child rash

Babies and toddlers may also occasionally suffer from a rash on the eyelid. A frequent cause is neurodermatitis. It occurs after the third month of life and often affects the facial skin as well as the scalp.

Dry, reddened and scaly eczema is typical. Neurodermatitis should not be confused with infantile seborrheic eczema. This skin disease, known to many people under the term head gneiss, is characterized by an occurrence immediately after birth.

Typical are firmly adhering, yellowish, greasy scales of the scalp. However, the eyelids are not affected. Another cause of a skin rash on the eyelid in children is inflammation of the eyelid margin, also known as blepharitis.

The reddened and swollen eyelids have a crusty coating. In addition, oily deposits are conspicuous directly on the edge of the eyelid. The treatment focuses on consistent hygiene of the eyelid margin. Antibiotic medication is rarely necessary.
