Products

Spearmint oil is found in chewing gum, toothpastes, oral care products, pharmaceuticals, and candy, among other products (e.g., Wrigley’s Spearmint Chewing Gum, USA 1893).

Structure and properties

Spearmint oil is an essential oil extracted by steam distillation from the leaves and herb of spearmint, or green mint, from the labiates family (Lamiaceae). The main components are L-carvone and limonene. The oil exists as a colorless, yellow to greenish-yellow liquid that is soluble in ethanol. Unlike peppermint oil, spearmint oil contains virtually no menthol.

Effects

Spearmint oil has a fresh, minty, pungent and aromatic taste.
