Introduction

The Tailor muscle (Musculus sartorius) belongs to the group of front thigh muscles. It is about 50 cm long and wraps itself helically around the quadriceps. The muscle has functions in both the hip joint and the knee joint.

The force applied by the muscle in the hip joint is twice as high as in the knee joint. Note: The term tailor muscle has nothing to do with the tailor’s seat. Rather, the upper adductors and the crested muscle produce the tailor’s seat. In leg muscle training, the tailor muscle is trained by the thigh flexor.

Approach, Origin, Innervation

Approach: Medial (body-centered) next to the tibial tuberosity (Tuberositas tibiae) Origin: Below the anterior, upper iliac spine (Spina iliaca anterior superior) Innervation: N. femoralisThe tailor muscle is not a muscle that is specifically trained in strength training. It develops alongside the thigh flexors through the following exercise:

  • Leg curl

In order to stretch the tailor muscle, a stretching must be done in the hip joint. The athlete stands in a walking position. The upper body is upright and points forward. The knee of the stretched thigh almost touches the ground.

Function

The tailor muscle (Musculus sartorius) causes flexion and external rotation in the hip joint. In the knee joint, contraction of the tailor muscle causes flexion and internal rotation.
