Therapy | Pulmonary Edema

Therapy

The following should be used as immediate therapeutic measures: First, the patient is positioned in a seated position and the legs are lowered to lower the blood pressure in the pulmonary vessels and to avoid aggravating the pulmonary edema. The secretion is aspirated. Sedation may be necessary.

The oxygen supply is increased by giving additional oxygen through the nasal probe. Supportive CPAP respiration, i.e. mechanical overpressure ventilation, may also be necessary. Depending on the cause of the pulmonary edema, causal intervention will also be used in the following to tackle the problem “at the root”.

If the cause of the pulmonary edema is heart failure, the heart function is supported to facilitate the pumping of blood. This is done by administering antihypertensive drugs and draining tablets, so-called “diuretics“, so that the general pressure in the blood vessels is reduced, thus reducing the tendency for fluid to leak from the vessels. Even in the case of renal insufficiency, there is too much water in the vascular system.

In this case, the patient has to undergo dialysis to remove the water masses from his body from outside, so to speak. In cases of toxic or allergic pulmonary edema, steroids are given to suppress the immune reaction.
