Endometriosis: Therapy

Reproductive medical procedures (“assisted reproduction technologies” ART)

• Intrauterine insemination (IUI; transfer of male semen into the uterine cavity) and controlled stimulation.An increased live birth rate (LGR) has been demonstrated in mild endometriosis after controlled ovarian stimulation and IUI.
• In vitro fertilization (IVF; “fertilization in a test tube”)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI; method of artificial insemination in which a single sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm (ooplasm) of an egg using a microcapillary); indications are:
  • Patients with endometriosis and tubal involvement.
  • Age of the woman >35 years
  • Reduced male fertility

Physical therapy (including physiotherapy)

• Balneotherapy (warm water baths with mineral salts dissolved in them).

Complementary treatment methods

• For pain management:
  • Acupuncture
  • Chinese medicine
  • Homeopathy
  • Phytotherapy (herbal medicine)

Psychotherapy

• If necessary, psychotherapeutic co-treatment, since patients with advanced endometriosis very often complain of anxiety disorders or depressive moods or are depressed. Fatigue-like complaints are also not uncommon.
