Varicose Veins (Varicosities): Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate varicose veins (varicose veins):

Leading symptoms

  • Dull pain in the legs after prolonged standing.
  • Feeling of pressure in the legs after standing for a long time
  • Feeling of heaviness in the legs
  • Feeling of tension in the legs
  • Slight lower leg edema (increase in circumference due to water retention).

Associated symptoms

  • Calf cramps at night
  • Tingling in the legs
  • Reddish spots on the legs

Note: If the varicose veins persist for a long time, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI; hypertension (high pressure) in the venous system, leading to changes in the veins and skin) occurs. See chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)/classification for Widmer’s staging of CVI.
