The following symptoms and complaints may indicate varicose veins (varicose veins):
Leading symptoms
- Dull pain in the legs after prolonged standing.
- Feeling of pressure in the legs after standing for a long time
- Feeling of heaviness in the legs
- Feeling of tension in the legs
- Slight lower leg edema (increase in circumference due to water retention).
Associated symptoms
- Calf cramps at night
- Tingling in the legs
- Reddish spots on the legs
Note: If the varicose veins persist for a long time, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI; hypertension (high pressure) in the venous system, leading to changes in the veins and skin) occurs. See chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)/classification for Widmer’s staging of CVI.
