Teething – that sounds like pain. What can parents do when babies whine restlessly and the first tooth is imminent? At what point the teeth show themselves varies from child to child. Some have teeth as early as three months, while others are still smiling toothlessly on their first birthday. But once teething starts, some sleepless nights are inevitable. Especially if the offspring has also caught a flu-like infection. This happens frequently, especially during this time, because the immune system is not yet fully developed.
How parents help their baby
Cuddling, carrying around and a lot of comforting – this does not calm the irritated jaw, but the suffering offspring. And because teething babies especially feel the need to chew on objects, mommy or daddy’s fingers are just the thing – the little ones think. Parents are usually less enthusiastic about this. Then teething rings can help as “finger doubles”. Filled with cooled liquid, they also have an analgesic effect. But be careful not to put the teething rings in the freezer – this could lead to frostbite in baby’s mouth, gums and oral mucosa. It is sufficient to store the rings in the normal refrigerator compartment.
Carrots and bread crusts are also suitable for sucking and chewing. However, adults should be careful that their offspring do not choke on them or that bitten-off pieces end up in the air – instead of in the esophagus.
Many babies find it pleasant when their parents gently massage the sore spots on the teething area. Special cooling gels and tinctures can provide additional relief from the tightening and itching. Sometimes homeopathic pellets that can be dissolved in water also help.
