Prognosis | Melanoma in situ

Prognosis

If the melanoma is removed completely and in time in situ, the chance of healing is almost 100%. If the melanoma has already developed, the chance of recovery in stage I of malignant degeneration is still over 90%.

Summary

Melanoma in situ is a preliminary stage of malignant melanoma. It probably develops due to a high and long-standing UV- exposure at the particularly light-exposed skin areas. Melanoma in situ develops from previously healthy melanocytes and grows as a grey-brown to black focus initially only in the superficial skin layer.

As a rule, adults over the age of 50 and especially men are affected by melanoma in situ. If the melanoma is removed early and completely by surgery or laser, the chances of recovery are almost 100%. If the melanoma in situ is not removed early, a malignant skin tumor can develop, whose chances of healing decrease with increasing stage. In order to detect such a melanoma in situ, a lot of experience and special examination equipment is necessary, so that cancer screening should be carried out regularly by a dermatologist.
