Prognosis

If the patient goes to hospital in time to receive adequate treatment, phlegmons usually have a very good prognosis. However, if a phlegmon is advanced and the patient does not go to hospital early enough, it is possible that the inflammation has progressed so far that in the worst case, for example, if a finger is affected, it may have to be amputated. Nevertheless, it can generally be said that phlegmons, if treated correctly, do not have to be a dramatic disease. Without the right therapy, however, phlegmons can quickly lead to severe complications, which can occur more quickly, especially in immunocompromised patients (children, the elderly, AIDS patients, pregnant women…) and should therefore be taken very seriously.
