In contrast to the exact mode of action of pyruvate as a dietary supplement, side effects are undisputed. When pyruvate is administered as capsules, powder or tablets, stomach problems may occur. These may include stomach pain, stomach cramps and digestive problems. Also, soft stools and possibly diarrhea may occur.

Dosage

The human body can produce pyruvate itself and is therefore not necessarily dependent on supplementation. However, the amount of pyruvate that the body can synthesize is relatively small. In order to always have enough pyruvate in the body, between two and five grams of pyruvate per day, taken with meals, are usually sufficient.Athletes have a higher energy requirement and therefore need more pyruvate to achieve positive effects.

As studies have shown, daily doses of at least 20 grams per day are relatively high. Since pyruvate is also a not quite inexpensive food supplement, supplementation with this substance can quickly cost several euros per day. If the doses are lower than 20 grams, the effects of pyruvate are increasingly less pronounced.

Therefore, if you really want to benefit from supplementation with pyruvate, you should take at least 20 grams per day in the form of capsules, tablets or powder. The danger with the high quantities is that the undesirable side effects such as stomach cramps, stomach pain, diarrhea, soft stool and indisposition may occur more frequently. If pyruvate is dosed too high, it has no additional effect, because the body can only absorb a certain amount of pyruvate at any given time.

This is due to the low absorption rate of pyruvate. The excess pyruvate is then simply excreted by the stool.
