Drug therapy is usually used for alveolar echinococcosis, as it is usually too late for radical surgery at diagnosis.
Therapy for cystic echinococcosis should always be performed in designated centers. In general, several therapeutic options exist:
Watch-and-wait – wait for inactive, asymptomatic cysts.
Drug therapy
Operative therapy
Puncture-Aspiration-Injection-Reaspiration (PAIR) – insertion of sterilizing solution into the cyst; concurrent drug therapy with albendazole is administered.
