Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, and obligatory laboratory parameters – for differential diagnostic clarification.
- X-ray of the knee joint – if bony involvement is suspected; anterior and posterior cruciate ligament rupture.
- Sonography (ultrasound examination) – if meniscus lesion, ligament injuries are suspected.
- Doppler sonography (ultrasound examination that can dynamically visualize fluid flows (especially blood flow)) – when vascular involvement is suspected.
- Computed tomography (CT) of the knee – sectional imaging method (X-ray images from different directions with computer-based evaluation) – if bony injuries are suspected.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI; computer-assisted cross-sectional imaging procedure (using magnetic fields, that is, without X-rays) of the knee – on suspicion of meniscus injury, ligament injuries of the knee joint; cartilage injuries of the knee joint, patellar luxation.
- Diagnostic arthroscopy (arthroscopy) – to exclude cartilage damage.
