Olympic Movement

The Olympic Movement is an association of organizations for the planning and realization of the Olympic Games. The focus is on the International Olympic Committee with Jacques Rogge as current president. Among the organizations are:

  • The international sports federations (IF`s) e.g. Fifa etc.
  • The NOK`s (National Olympic Committees)
  • Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games

Similarities to the ancient games

  • Take place every 4 years.
  • Only professional athletes take part (in the Olympic Games of modern times since 1992.
  • Festival idea (opening ceremony/closing ceremony).
  • Musical competitions (1912 – 1948).
  • The idea of a ceasefire has remained as an idea of peace.
  • Olympic Oath.
  • Public honoring
  • Matrimonial Court (today IOC)
  • Ausshluss as punishment (see Ben Johnsen)

Differences to the games of antiquity

  • Today, the motto is, being there is everything, in the past it was only victory that counted.
  • Wars were interrupted because of the games of the ancient world.
  • In the past, the Games were held only in Athens.
  • Games of antiquity had a religious background.
  • Women were not allowed to participate in the games of antiquity. At the games of modern times, women were first allowed to swim in 1928.
  • The games were played naked.
  • In the games of antiquity there was only the victory (place 1)
  • The visit was free of charge

Further interesting information

  • Only since 1990 have professionals been allowed to participate in the Olympic Games. Boxing is still on an amateur basis.
  • Only three over 23-year-olds are allowed to play in a male soccer team.
  • In 1960 the Ethiopian marathon runner ran the entire distance barefoot.
  • From 1912 to 1948 Olympic art competitions were also held.
  • In 1936 a prize for the best mountaineer was awarded.
  • In 1984 the games (Los Angeles) were organized and financed privately for the first time.
  • With 3.4 billion U.S. dollars in revenue, the 2008 Olympic Games exceeded the 2006 World Cup with approximately 1.1 billion.
