Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis.
Family history
- Are there people in your family with back pain or bone/joint disease (eg, ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis)?
Social history
- What is your profession?
Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).
- Do you suffer from sensitivity to movement of the spine?
- Is your spine sensitive to vibration?
- Do you suffer from morning stiffness of the spine that improves with movement?
- Have you noticed that your ‘spine has changed (in terms of a hunchback)?
- Do you have joint problems?
- Do you have a fever?
- Have you noticed any weight loss recently? Do you suffer from loss of appetite?
- Do you have persistent pain, especially at night?
- Do you suffer from neck pain or stiffness?
- How long have these changes existed?
- Are there any additional changes such as fever, fatigue or skin changes?
- Do you have any eye discomfort?
