Structure and properties
Salsalate (C14H10O5, Mr = 258.2 g/mol) is a dimer of salicylic acid. It exists as a white powder that is almost insoluble in water.
Effects
Salsalate (ATC N02BA06) has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It is partially hydrolyzed in the intestine to two molecules of salicylic acid. A portion is also absorbed unchanged into the body where it is metabolized. In our view, it should be used with restraint because of the possible adverse effects.
Indications
For the treatment of painful and inflammatory diseases, for example, arthritis and osteoarthritis. Discussed is also a possible use in diabetes mellitus.
Adverse effects
The most common possible adverse effects include tinnitus, nausea, hearing disorders, skin rash, and dizziness.
