Anthrax: Complications

The following are the major diseases or complications that may be contributed to by anthrax (anthrax):

Respiratory system (J00-J99)

  • ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) – acute respiratory failure, often associated with MODS, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome; MOF: multiple organ failure; simultaneous or sequential failure or severe functional impairment of multiple vital organ systems of the body.

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99).

  • Cardiovascular failure

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

Mouth, esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Compartment syndrome – increase in pressure in a muscle compartment that may have resulted in damage to vessels, nerves, and soft tissues.
  • Necrotizing fasciitis – foudroyant life-threatening infection of the skin, subcutis (subcutaneous tissue), and fascia with progressive gangrene; often involves patients with diabetes mellitus or other conditions that lead to circulatory problems or decreased immunity
