Associated symptoms
Depending on the cause of the dark urine, other symptoms may be added. Since the most common cause of dark urine is dehydration, headaches, dizziness and confusion may be added. In the worst case it can lead to loss of consciousness or even delirium (passage syndrome).
Furthermore, an increased concentration of bilirubin can lead to a discoloration of the urine. The increased bilirubin can deposit in the skin and lead to an icterus, the so-called jaundice. It is often observed that patients suffer from itching when the bilirubin level is elevated.
Another symptom is often light-colored stool. If the cause is a functional disorder of the liver, other symptoms such as pressure in the upper abdomen, dropsy and tiredness may be added. In the case of a gallstone, colicky, undulating pain in the right upper abdomen may also be present.
If the cause is tumorous growth, accompanying symptoms such as weight loss, heavy night sweats and fever can be an indication of this. If darkly discolored urine occurs together with light-colored bowel movements, this could be an indication of a cholestatic, i.e. bile-related, disease. It is a complex of symptoms: dark urine, light-colored stool and itching.
The reason for this is an increased concentration of bilirubin in the blood. Normally, the bilirubin reaches the intestines via the bile. This gives the stool its color.
If the bile flow is disturbed, the bilirubin in the intestine is missing. It is increasingly excreted in the urine. This results in brown urine and discoloration of the stool.
Normally, the urine of a healthy person is clear and bright. Some diseases can change the texture, color and smell of the urine. If the urine is cloudy, this can have various causes.
Frequently, when the urine is inflamed, it is cloudy and bright and can appear flaky. The reason is an increased concentration of proteins and bacteria in the urine. If the urine is rather red-brown and cloudy, red blood cells are usually responsible. This should be immediately examined and clarified by a doctor.
