Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Medical History

Medical history (history) is an important component in the diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?
  • Are there any neurological or psychiatric conditions in your family that are common?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Is inattention present? How does it manifest itself?
  • Is motor restlessness present? How does it express itself?
  • Is impulsivity present? How does it express itself?
  • How is the behavior in school / kindergarten?
  • What is the behavior at home?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Does your child show regular growth and development?
  • Did you eat licorice during pregnancy (licorice consumption)?
  • Do you smoke? If yes, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (neurological diseases, diseases during pregnancy).
  • Operations
  • Allergies

Medication history

  • Benzodiazepines during pregnancy
  • Valproate during pregnancy
  • Prenatal administration of glucocorticoids (established therapy for threatened preterm birth to prevent respiratory distress syndrome).

Several testing procedures are available for history taking, including neuropsychological testing and other questionnaire procedures.
