Binge Eating Disorder: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of binge eating disorder (BED).

Family history

  • Are there any disorders (e.g., eating disorders) in your family that are common?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?
  • What is the situation at home?
  • How to characterize the personality of the person(s) concerned? (Question to parents)
  • What is the relationship with individual family members?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you had any recent unrestrained eating episodes?
  • In what situations do you eat?
  • Have you tried any diets?
  • What is the current diet plan?
  • Does a feeling of satiety occur quickly when eating?
  • How do you perceive your own body?
  • How has the weight developed in recent weeks?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Are you overweight? Please tell us your body weight (in kg) and height (in cm).
  • Do you suffer from sleep disorders?
  • Are you pregnant? (Ask question about the last menstrual period!)
  • Do you smoke? If yes, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?
