Brittle fingernails during pregnancy
Many women suffer from brittle, dry nails during pregnancy, which can easily break off and splinter. This is caused by the pregnancy hormones, which ensure that the finger and toenails grow faster than ever, but at the same time the nails can also become thin and brittle. In general, brittle fingernails can also be caused by a vitamin or mineral deficiency.
However, before you take vitamin A, folic acid or biotin preparations during pregnancy, it is advisable to discuss this with your gynaecologist. Another, rarer cause of brittle fingernails during pregnancy can be an iron deficiency, from which the majority of young women in our grades suffer and which can become symptomatic during pregnancy. Additional symptoms such as tiredness, weakness or paleness can confirm this suspicion.
