Bronchitis: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of bronchitis.

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?
  • Are there any lung diseases in your family that are common?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Are you exposed to harmful working substances in your profession?

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • How long has the cough been present?
  • Has it changed in intensity? Do you suffer from coughing attacks?
  • Do you cough more in the morning or in the evening?
  • Do you have sputum?
  • Do you have shortness of breath?*
  • What does the sputum look like? (color, consistency)
  • Do you have a fever?* Do you feel sick?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Has your appetite changed?
  • Have you lost body weight unintentionally?
  • Do you smoke (this includes passive smoking)? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, which drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease).

  • Allergies
  • Medication history

Environmental history

  • Air pollutants: particulate matter, ozone, sulfur dioxide.
